The City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program funds Oakland-based art and cultural activities that reflect the diversity of the city for the citizens of and visitors to Oakland.

The Cultural Funding Program focuses on three key areas of support:

1. General Support

2. Neighborhood Arts

3. Arts Education

Funding for the Cultural Funding Program comes from the City of Oakland's General Fund, and the Program annually distributes over approximately $1million in awards through a variety of funding categories.

Goals and Objectives:

Goal I: To provide access to financial support—through a competitive process—to a wide range of Oakland-based artists and nonprofit organizations providing arts and cultural services in Oakland.

Objectives:

  • Provide ongoing operating support to arts organizations
  • Assist in the development of stable arts organizations
  • Provide direct support to individual artists
  • Ensure a fair and accessible funding program through an equitable application and review process

Goal II: To infuse Oakland’s neighborhoods with arts and cultural activities that improve exposure to, understanding of and respect for diverse cultural heritages, and to support arts activities that engage the community.

Objectives:

  • Support activities that present art forms in cross-cultural ways that enhance understanding of and respect for diverse cultural traditions
  • Support art forms that express/reflect distinct cultural heritages (in pure form) and artists who carry on traditional (folk/heritage) artistic expressions
  • Encourage collaborations between neighborhood community programs and artists and arts organizations
  • Encourage cross-discipline and cross-cultural collaborations among artists and organizations
  • Enhance and stimulate economic development efforts throughout Oakland

Goal III: To support arts education activities in Oakland’s schools and among Oakland youth.

Objectives:

  • Support expansion of arts education programs in the school, after school and during the summer for school aged children
  • Encourage the creative development of Oakland’s youth
  • Support the advancement of Oakland’s young artists
